  • There might not be a Papi update this week after all.  I have no drive to work on it today and any time I try it doesn’t feel right.

Because of a bout of bronchitis I can’t work for at least the next few days, so let the commissions be opened!  Taking sketch commissions right now starting at $5 per character.

Other commissions are available at request and prices negotiable.

2 have been taken, still plenty available.

I dunno, the old animated universe for DC was pretty solid. Not perfect, but solid.

The old stuff was great.  Batman the animated series, and Justice League were amazing.  As was Teen Titans, and more recently Young Justice.

Let me rephrase, I like DC’s characters, but I HATE what they’ve done with their characters in the past few years.

I can agree with that. I also gotta give props to Static Shock. He was just straight up one of the coolest heroes they had back in the day.

The animated DC movies that are released straight to video are pretty solid. I recommend some such as Dark Knight Returns, Under the Red Hood, and Superman vs the Elite.

I’ve seen a fair few of the DC animated movies, but they’re rather hit or miss.  Red Hood was great, and Assault on Arkham was good, but Justice League War and King of Atlantis were mediocre at best.  They can be good, but they’re usually pretty middling and like most of DC they’re 70% Batman.

  • As much as I beat on DC, I do like their characters.  I just really don’t like the way they use their characters in multimedia (movies/shows/etc.)

  • I find it odd that while DC is putting together a team of 10 villains that have never been introduced, spoken of, or even hinted towards for the third entrant in their cinematic universe, Marvel has already introduced the villains for both Captain America: Civil War, and Black Panther.

  • It always bugs me when people harp on Marvel movies as being sexist because there aren’t nearly as many female characters, and those that are there are usually foils or romantic interests for the male lead.  That being said, there are still a fair few women in Marvel movies, and while they are often romantically engaged with the male hero, they are also depicted with their own lives, passions, jobs, and goals outside of being the girlfriend of a superhero.  They are their own characters who force the male superhero to grow and change, while doing the same themselves.

DC is every bit as bad about including women in their movies, and fair bit worse at making them characters outside of romance.  In part this is due to there being fewer modern DC movies, but there’s also the issue that the characters themselves aren’t really there outside of being a romantic lead.  The best example against this is Lois Lane in Man of Steel, who’s actually somewhat active for a little bit before being relegated to the typical damsel-in-distress role and chasing after Superman for the bulk of the film.

Both companies need to work on incorporating dynamic female characters into their respective movies.  At the moment though I think Marvel’s got a hell of a lead and has been doing it a lot better for quite some time.
