  • the control was actually a bit too stiff for my liking. one wrong button press can lead you to overshooting a one block wide platform and falling into an inescapable spike pit. but i was more bored then anything.

The same can be said about many classic 8-bit and 16-bit platformers.

  • well, that's nice. its getting to that point that's the hard part. if an NES game reviewed today pulled the crap volgarr the viking pulled today, it would be crucified. but naturally, because it was made during the hardcore game's boom, it gets a free pass.
    switch-up-snowfox

The mechanics are sound, just frustrating.  Jumping is controllable, and manage your double jump to redirect is something that wasn’t unheard of in the NES days.  Enemies have consistent attack patterns and always spawn in the same way.  Attacks don’t come from offscreen, so there aren’t cheap deaths, just deaths that you don’t have the time to react to due to being in an animation.

All of these things are present in games from the NES days, and from today, hardcore or not.  The only things that make Volgarr difficult are the checkpoints which actually exist unlike a number of NES games, and the limited control in the platforming which actually makes some sense.

  • i hate it. i didn't even clear the first world. its ghosts and goblins with a fresh coat of paint.
    switch-up-snowfox

It’s definitely frustrating, but it’s fun.  The sense of satisfaction when you clear an area, especially if you can manage it untouched is incredible.

  • i'm curious, ever hear of or play volgarr the viking?

Eeyup.  When I first got my Xbox One it was a free game for the month.  I’ve only ever made it halfway through the second world.

    THIS.  THIS EXACTLY.

We went from “Girls got balls, they’re just a little higher up!” to “MAKING FUN OF BATH BOMBS IS MISOGYNISTIC!!!” (we won’t even get into the fact of gendering hygiene items, or fuckin’ lattes for that matter).

We went from “We can all play together!  Girls can play baseball, and boys can play with dolls!  Do whatever you enjoy!” to “YOU CAN’T WATCH THIS PUBLICLY BROADCAST SHOW–IT’S FOR WOMEN ONLY!  YOU’RE INVADING WOMENS’ SPACES!!”.

I watched people on this site rally behind a guy’s right to wear a skirt to school.  Then I watched the same people turn around, and try to exclude men from liking something they decided was “feminine”.

They demand strong female characters in movies and games, and then complain that she’s either “not pretty enough”, “not realistic”, or “just a male fantasy”, even if the character was created by a woman.

They talk about women being able to freely express and rejoice in their sexuality, and then turn around and chastise such women for “degrading themselves”.

They’ll accuse a man of being a sexual predator/child molester just for watching a cartoon, and then turn around and defend an ACTUAL sexual predator/child molester just because she calls herself a “feminist”.

They cry about adult content “ruining” the things they like while simultaneously creating more gay porn for video games and children’s cartoons than I have ever seen in my entire fucking life.  They cry about “sexualizing everything” while they make porn out of a fuckin’ clock and a pad of paper.

I see girls screech about “fat shaming”, and demanding that armpit or leg hair shouldn’t be a deciding factor on whether or not a woman is beautiful, then turn around and screech about “neckbeards”, whine about how “gross” boys are that wear certain articles of clothing, and proudly proclaim how they’d never date a short man (a factor a person is completely unable to change, unlike weight).

I’ve seen women claim to be “empowered”, yet live in fear of false statistics, and demand that they need “protection” from the rest of the world.  It used to be about proving ourselves tough enough to handle anything, and now we want the world to dumb down because we’re apparently too delicate and sensitive to handle basic reality?  Instead of “BRING IT ON!”, now it’s “No, that’s too SCARY!  That might TRIGGER me!”.  What the actual fuck??

It’s a festering bouillabaisse of hypocrisy.

This isn’t “empowering” women.  It’s just being a whiny, spineless bunch of fuckin’ twats.  You’re not allowed to be a happy, content woman.  You have to be an angry, miserable one, or you have “internalized misogyny”.

And then they sit around and get angry wondering why the rest of us want nothing to do with them, or their warped ideals.  YOU EMBARRASS US, THAT’S FUCKING WHY.

“They cry about adult content ‘ruining’ the things they like while simultaneously creating more gay porn for video games and children’s cartoons than I have ever seen in my entire fucking life.  They cry about ‘sexualizing everything’ while they make porn out of a fuckin’ clock and a pad of paper.“

(Mostly) gross older men create hyper-sexualized fanart, nothing that shows respect to the characters portrayed within, that’s the adult content they’re talking about.
God forbid someone create gay porn (underrepresented people). Not all porn is serious.

“I see girls screech about ‘fat shaming’, and demanding that armpit or leg hair shouldn’t be a deciding factor on whether or not a woman is beautiful, then turn around and screech about ‘neckbeards’, whine about how ‘gross’ boys are that wear certain articles of clothing, and proudly proclaim how they’d never date a short man (a factor a person is completely unable to change, unlike weight).“

Men really aren’t put under the same constant image pressure as women.

“(Mostly) gross older men create hyper-sexualized fanart“.

Bullshit.  Even in the MLP:FiM fandom, a lot of the adult content is produced by women.  You’re just talking out of your own ass because of all the shit you’ve been fed.  And you’re very conveniently forgetting that a lot of gay fan art is drawn by straight women.  One single trek into fanfiction.net and deviantArt would disprove your claim immediately.  Or, even better: Google y!Gallery.  Like HOW THE FUCK are you not fucking aware of this?  Or are you so far into denial that you’re just ignoring reality completely?  “Yaoi fangirl” is an actual term.  One of the biggest complaints some people had about the Invader Zim fandom was how a lot of girls shipped Zim and Dib (even the creator of the series regards his fans with disdain).  Not only am I a woman, but I was first introduced to yaoi/slash from other women.  Female mangaka make yaoi doujinshis all the fucking time.  I’m part of the Team Fortress 2 fandom, hon, and the fandom for it churns out gay porn like no other.  There are naked character models for the game (created–gasp!–by a woman!).  And, let’s not forget “Gumhoes”, “Once-luts”, et cetera.  Oh my god, you are ignorant as fuck.

“Men really aren’t put under the same constant image pressure as women.“

Oh, really?  Really?  You sure you want to go down that route, sweetheart?  Are you sure you’re ready to back that statement?

Now, envision a stereotypical sports fan.  What do you come up with?  A fat white guy in grease paint.  Picture a stereotypical “computer nerd”.  What did you come up with?  A fat white guy with glasses.  Comic book geek?  Same thing.  Gamer?  Another fat white guy.  Any time we come up with a negative stereotype, we automatically associate it with being male, and being obese.

Two girls kiss on a television sitcom?  It’s a revolutionary event.  Meanwhile, two guys kissed on a show years earlier, and everyone forgot.

Women can wear men’s clothing without fear.  A man in women’s clothing is almost always frowned upon.

Movies with lesbianism often make it to the top of the box office (Black Swan, anyone?).  Movies with gay men are relegated to the indie circuit.  The one time one broke out in popularity, it ended up becoming the butt of every joke about either gay men, or cowboys.

I’ve covered all of this and more in a previous post.  And, once again:

Boys biologically NEED positivity.  They NEED nurturing that many of them are not receiving.  There is literally a part of the brain (the corpus callosum) that is responsible for coping with trauma.  Not only is this area smaller in boys than girls from the start, but when subjected to trauma or neglect, the corpus callosum in a male will reduce in size, while in a female, it remains the same.

By treating little boys as though they should be perfect and self-sufficient, and discouraging them from expressing emotion or allowing them to have flaws, we’re genuinely causing them psychological harm.

Meanwhile, women in first-world countries are more privileged over men than they have ever been.

Oh, and let’s not forget:  Men aged 18-25 are STILL required to sign up for the draft, while women are NOT.  That means that if and when a major war breaks out, women have zero obligation to fight in it, while men will be chosen by their birth dates, and sent onto the battlefield (and possibly to their graves) against their will.

So fuck you that boys have zero pressure on them from society, because we’re literally the ones that fucked them over in the first place.

  • I find it hilarious that CBS and DC released a first look at their upcoming Supergirl series, and almost half of it is almost identical to the parody that SNL did for Black Widow.

  • fetch26291 replied to your post: Friendly reminder that when paperwork/applications…

These days, it’s one of the top reasons a child calls their mother. To get the correct answer. In fact, you should ask anyone who asks what it is: Can you call your Mom? If they answer yes, then tell them: Call her & ask.

Except it’s not a matter of them knowing the mother’s maiden name, it’s a matter of them putting it down in the paperwork.  A lot of things require some form of security to verify identity during maintenance and phone calls, especially credit cards.  If you don’t have information like that noted down properly then best case scenario is that it takes longer to verify security and get done what you want done, and worst case is that it doesn’t work out at all because the misentered info can interfere with background checks.

That aside, do you really want to tell grown men and women to call their mommys to ask for her maiden name when they’re trying to get information pertinent to their job and finances?  That’s a great way to embarass someone and piss them off.
