TURN OFF YOUR EXP SHARE!
Doing a Nuzlocke without the EXP share and my entire party is right at the low 30s going in to the 3rd gym, just a couple levels above the average trainer. If you like to grind, turn off your Exp Share and you’ll have ample reason. If you don’t like to grind, then turn it on and stop complaining.
Further evidence: 6 badges, average level of my team is mid to low 40s. Average level of trainers in the area? Mid-40s.
About to start back up, going in to the 8th gym. Looking up some level comparisons, the trainers in the 8th gym in Kalos are between 15-20 levels higher than those in Unova at the same place. Trainers are getting in to the low 60s in the surrounding routes. The EXP Share is the way it is in X and Y for a reason.
