Hmm… I’m not sure how to feel about it, regarding the criticism that says it’s just copying “The Book of Life”. See, it does look like an original story, but I do find the supposed difference in the start dates for their production to be suspicious as well.
I dunno. I want to see more of Mexico’s culture represented on the silver screen in creative ways, but on the other hand I want it to be done in a good way.
Hmmm… maybe someone more filled in than I am can clue me in to what’s bad about Coco right now.
Honestly, I think the hate that it’s getting from the teaser trailer alone is kind of par for the course for Disney films on Tumblr at this point, and it’s because it’s more because it’s Disney/Pixar than anything else. We’ve hardly seen anything on the film, so the posts comparing the variety of character designs in Incredibles to Coco and other Pixar films is rather moot, seeing as the characters that are cherry picked for the point are typically secondary at best and not the focus. The comparisons to Book of Life are fair, but again, we have hardly seen anything on the film yet so it’s really hard to judge.
Outside of the Cars series Pixar has yet to put out a truly bad film, and the worst they’ve done in the last couple decades has been The Good Dinosaur, which did poorly but was still a well made Western, so I have faith that they’ll do justice to Coco, and at worst put out a competently made movie that doesn’t quite stand on par with Book of Life but tells a different story.
I legitimately think the hate it’s getting is because Book of Life was a lesser known film in comparison to most things put out by Disney, and it didn’t do as well or got the recognition it deserved because of it. I’m pretty sure that if Coco wasn’t Disney/Pixar and was the exact same product being put out by a different studio Tumblr would be hyped for it.
