Brushing off the problem with the explanation of “We’re too big, it won’t work for us” does nothing to help matters, and arguably only raises new ones.  You’re right, all of these countries are smaller than Texas, but size does not effect an idea, backing does, and economically the US has better economic backing than any of the three.  The GDP of the US is the 6th highest in the world, whereas Finland’s is 24th, Portugal’s is 46th, and Iceland is 14th.  That is money per capita.

The difference between these countries and the US on these issues is not size.  It’s viewpoint, and that is reflected in their actions.

Finland education is the highest in the world because it treats teachers as valued professionals instead of glorified babysitters, and it treats students as children to be guided, rather than cogs to be shaped.

Portugal has helped its drug issues by acknowledging that people can and will get substances should they have the desire to do so, and that it will destroy their bodies.  So, instead of punishing the person and perpetuating a habit at public cost, they treat the person as one who is ill and needs help, and works to end the addiction outright.  Honey vs. vinegar.

Iceland recovered from their recession more efficiently than other countries because they recognized that the issue was not with the common person, and that the common person would be the one to be most heavily affected.  They helped their people as a whole, at the cost of harming the few who had lead their economy to recession and collapse.

This is not a matter of size.  This is a matter of views.  These countries chose to look to their citizens as people who would govern the future, and should be helped in the present.  Whether the US has or does the same is a matter of debate.
