  • I will never understand why Digimon games (and Digimon in general, but mostly the games) have such little variety in terms of Digimon that show up.  Case in point, the last two games that have come out, Cyber Sleuth and the upcoming Next Order both have around 250 species, with between 20 and 25% of those just being recolors of other Digimon, sometimes with minor alterations.  These are games coming out on the Vita and PS4, there’s no excuse.

X and Y (which released a year prior to the Vita release of Cyber Sleuth on inferior hardware) had more than 700 unique sprites and species, with every one having a minimum of 1 additional color, and all fully animated.  Sun and Moon are only going to increase that number.

Digimon has nowhere near the constraints with what they can and can’t make into a Digimon that Pokemon does, so why is it so hard to put in more than 250 actually unique models and species?

  • One of the more impressive parts of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth was that it had pretty impressive models for every Digimon in the game.  That was severely undermined by there being fewer than 250 Digimon in the game and 10% of those available being recolors of other Digimon also available, and animations being limited to only a handful for each sprite.

That was further undermined by Pokemon releasing X and Y 2 years prior to the Vita release of Cyber Sleuth, and those games containing individual models for 721 unique species of Pokemon, as well as models for each Mega Evolution, and every single model having a minimum of 1 alternate color palette all having extensive animations through Pokemon Amie.

  • As a game I’d give Digimon Cyber Sleuth a 7.3/10 as a standalone outside of previous entries or other examples from the genre and without my own opinions on it.

As for my opinion of it I’d rate it 3.8/10 based off of personal experience, knowledge and experience with previous entries in the series, and in comparison to its competitors.

If you’d like to know why, feel free to ask.

  • I tend to judge games as I play them, but try to withhold judgement on a game as a whole until I’m done with it.  Now and then though there will be a game that just feels like it petered out after about 5 hours, and at the 16 hour mark I’m just about ready to stop altogether because of issues with the game, despite there supposedly being a fair bit left to go.
