  • Mass Effect 3 review

    fleurmod:

At the request of a certain chicken man, let’s take a look at one of the best, and most controversial, games of 2012: Mass Effect 3.  Bear in mind that I have not played this game since it was released, and have not touched the DLC, so this review is over the main game alone.

    Spoilers, duh.

I have one more review on my roster right now, so if there’s any movie, game or series you’d like me to look over feel free to suggest it.

  • Good news and bad news

Bad news:  My tablet was damaged and no longer works, meaning that I cannot draw for Papi, or for the Patreon request streams or bonus images/comics.

Good news:  Thanks to support from fabuleuxosity and others on Patreon I was able to order a new tablet that will arrive within a couple weeks.  Should I manage to fix my current tablet before then, then I will have a spare in case of emergencies

Until then, sadly, Papillon’s Hive and Patreon events will have to be put on hiatus unless I manage to fix things.  Please, bear with me until then.

    fleurmod:

People, or at least Tumblr, have a tendency to attack Disney on character design more than other companies. Ghibli often reuses character designs among female protagonists, not all the time but often. Disney does the same thing, but they’re the ones who get bashed.

    Dreamworks…

‘Disney has touched most ethnicities in two decades.’ - …uh.

Yeah, once an ethnicity and no more, and oftentimes poorly.

People don’t hold other animation studios to their standards because Disney has been around for far longer and hasn’t changed with the quickness of even DreamWorks’ like…twenty.

They’re also the most visible. I don’t hear of them laying off people because they’ve been sliding since late 2012.

These double standards are why I made the post in the first place.  The issue isn’t that a company does or doesn’t portray different groups in their films, but that different companies are held up differently for doing the exact same thing.

Yes, Disney has been around much longer, but that shouldn’t be a factor for what they put out today.  Disney has been around for decades, but in the time that they have had major competitors they have innovated the animation industry and had a wide array of representation in their movies even if they have had many films that feature Caucasian protagonists.    Other companies have done the same, and often much less, in the same time and are either ignored or lauded for doing the same things that Disney is criticized for.

Disney has had its issues and controversies.  I have no intention of arguing against that.  However, it is not that that angers me, but the double standards present in the criticisms that bug me.  As I said, people are welcome to dislike or criticize a company, but just because others haven’t been around as long is no excuse to give them a free pass on the exact same things.

  • Headcanon: When a new queen leaves the hive to start her own, she is permitted to select a few drones to accompany her. Among drones, it is considered a great privilege to be chosen as a hive "firstling".
    rawiltshire103-deactivated20151

This is very true, and can be seen in Libi taking Draco with her.  When constructing a new hive, a Queen’s sense of reason is often overtaken by instinctual drives and she will sometimes forget to feed while seeking or building a new home.  At these times, the presence of her mother’s drones may keep the new Queen fed and well.

  • BRUTICUS ONLINE! Was the exact moment that I crapped myself from excitement. And don't get me started on Grimlock's level. Or the epicness of the final fight. I mean. Omg. So good!

  • War and fall are a couple of the best games I've played as well as the best transformers story I've heard.

War for Cybertron was fantastic, and Fall of Cybertron built off of that to be an even better game, while including the Combaticons (By our pieces combined, I AM BRUTICUS!) and the Dinobots.

Rise of the Dark Spark bridges a few of the gaps that are in Fall of Cybertron (that you don’t really notice while playing) while also tying in a story with an alternate Bayformer timeline.  It’s not as strong, but it’s still worth playing.

I DID want to play Fall of Cybertron, I will definitely give it a try now.

Fall is a fantastic game on its own, with one of the best credits scenes I’ve ever seen.  I would recommend playing War for Cybertron first, as it does take place beforehand (and has co-op during the campaign if Claire also wants to play, though that may require a second copy).

If you don’t have, or want to spend, the money to purchase either game then I’d recommend finding a playthrough on youtube.

You know what I need to get more into Transformers, I really enjoy the bayformers, so I think I’d enjoy the shows just as much.

While I was talking about most any movie/show/game to review, you should definitely watch some of the Transformers cartoons if you get time.  The Armada/Energon/Cybertron series are relatively recent classics, and I’d consider Beast Wars to be one of the best series in the franchise, even if just out of nostalgia.  Transformers Animated isn’t bad, though it takes some getting used to, and while I unfortunately don’t have much experience with Transformers Prime, I have heard only good things.

The classic cartoon is cheesy, but a classic for a reason.  If you want to watch it, then best of luck.  I would recommend High Moon Studio’s War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron (as well as the recent Rise of the Dark Spark, even though it doesn’t quite live up to its predecessors).  They are all great games, and fantastic homages to the original series, with great gameplay, sound design, music, graphics, etc.

They’re also all on Steam, Xbox 360, PS3 etc.
