”Freak of the Week” music video (directed by Juanjo Guarnido)

It doesn’t have pink-haired skeletons, so people will probably not like it as much.

Sadly.
The song and animation far surpasses THAT video, yet this is trailing behind in views, from what I know not even passed 300,000. This needs MUCH more attention.

Indeed. I mean, this whole video is metal as fuck! That’s awesome!

It’s not hard to see why this video is trailing behind Ghost.  It’s not because of the animation (which is absolutely gorgeous, mind you).  It’s not because of the music (a rather subjective matter on which is better, I didn’t much care for the song).  It’s because while Freak of the Week is very well made and put together, it’s an official work, and a shallow one.  It’s gorgeous because it’s professionally made for the explicit purpose of playing the song and showing the band.  It doesn’t tell a story, it doesn’t give characters, or anything to relate to.  It just keeps saying “I look great, look at me, aren’t I awesome?”  Despite the wonderful animation, this is just a music video and that’s all it’s going to be.

Say what you want about Ghost, but you have to acknowledge that it’s something different entirely, and that is what people have found appealing.  It’s a fan workmade in response to the song, not for the song’s release.  It told a story that was backed by the lyrics, and is understandable without them.  It introduced characters that lived in a moment outside of playing the song they were in.  That’s why it’s popular; it’s more than just a music video and so it’s become so much more.
