I just saw a post that pointed out that something in support of that theory would be the outfit pearl wore during the episode she and steven were building a spaceship, which had a pink colored diamond shape over her chest, basically in the same place as the yellow diamonds on jasper and peridot's outfits

When you take that theory into consideration, Pearl being overprotective of Steven takes on a new layer of meaning, as Steven is effectively a Gem prince and Pearl was a royal retainer.
