Trainer Tips:

For all the trainers playing Pokemon Gen1 for the first time!

  1. Special Atk. and Special Def. are bundled up into a single stat, so keep that in mind when deciding what Pokemon to use!
  2. There’s no breeding in these games, but there’s also no Effort Values, Natures, IVs, Abilities, or even gendered pokemon. So it’s not a big deal.
  3. Critical hits and One Hit-KO moves are based on a pokemon’s speed here! The faster the user the more likely they are to land!
  4. Psychic Types are broken as heck, Ghost moves are ineffective here, so get yourself a Starmie, Jynx, Hypno, or Alakazam (especially the latter two since they’re pure-psychic) if you’re having trouble!
  5. FOCUS ENERGY AND DIRE HIT DON’T WORK, they’re bugged and decrease your Crit. ratio instead of boosting it so avoid these moves like the plague!
  6. You can trick an NPC’s pokemon with non-damaging psychic moves (agility, amnesia) to spam their moves if you use a poison type!
  7. If you chose Charmander and are having a tough time against Brock, take advantage of his Onix’s Bide to decrease its stats (Sand-attack, Growl, Leer/Tail-whip). It unleashes nothing because you didn’t damage it and you can now chip away at it when it tries to use Screech or Tackle and spam the non-damaging moves when it’s using Bide.

If you’re experienced in Gen1, feel free to add stuff to this list to give a little hand to the new kids haha (or let them suffer, I guess… your choice XD)

8.The fast way to beat brock is to either train a butterfree up to know confusion or grab a mankey. Nindoran’s also work but need to be trained higher. Thrash is super broken on Nidoking remember so if you are going this route its done.

9. Go ahead and by that magicarp. Its worth training no matter how hard it is to train.

10. Misty is easy to beat if you catch an oddish or bellsprout. Watch out for peck from goldeen.

11. Dont forget there is a mew glitch that you have to do before you go take on Misty.

12.Caching a dugtrio makes it easy to beat Lt. Surge

13. When the guard says gee I’m thirsty, get him a drink from the large apartment building in Celadon. Make sure to go around to the back entrance eevee lovers.

14.Before going past your rival on the SS Anne make sure you have explored everywhere else. once you help the captain, the ship is gone.

15. Use Slash, Crabhammer, Razor Leaf, and Karate Chop. Due to some broken mechanics, they wind up critting eight times more often than other moves.

16. Always keep an Ice Heal.  Freezing doesn’t happen often, but when it does, you won’t thaw out unless you use one or get hit by a fire move.

17. Blizzard has 90% accuracy.  Spam the hell out of it if you have it.

18. You take a turn to wake up from sleep, so use sleep-inducing moves whenever possible.

19. Some types affect others differently.  Bug and Poison are super effective against each other, Ice does 1x damage to Fire, and–as previously mentioned–Psychic-types are immune to Ghost.  If a Pokemon is dual-typed, the text for type-effectiveness was often displayed incorrectly, though the proper amount of damage was applied.

20. Don’t use Rage.  Just…don’t.

21. Some Pokemon (Dratini, Kangaskhan, Tauros, and especially Chansey) are a pain in the ass to get in the Safari Zone.  There’s no reliable way to catch them, but I’d suggest throwing three rocks and then a ball.  They’re likely to run away, but this is the best method I’ve found.
For all the others, just spam Safari Balls.

22. Karate Chop, Bite, and Gust are all Normal-type in this generation.  Dig is 100 power (for reference, it’s the same as Earthquake), but only Diglett and Dugtrio learn it by leveling up, so you’ll need to use a TM to give it to anything else.  Keep in mind that TMs are one use only in this generation, and you can’t breed to spread them to other Pokemon.  Wing Attack’s power is only 35, so stick with Quick Attack and Fly.

23. Softboiled is super useful especially for Victory Road, but it’s Chansey’s signature move…and you need a TM to learn it.  Yeah, you read that right. You have to use Surf to get to a man on the other side of a little pond to get it.

24. There are no move relearners, so if your Pokemon evolves too late and misses one, you can’t get it back.

25. There are only five Moon Stones in the game, and four Pokemon need them to evolves.  Be careful.

26. It’s possible to get a lvl1 Gengar without trading Haunter and before beating Brock.(similar to the Mew method)

27. If you plan on raising a Clefable do not evolve it as soon as you get a moon stone as it will not learn any new moves. Lvl to 48 then evolve to get that sweet Light Screen move.

28. Have the old man show you how to catch Pokemon, then fly to Cinnabar and surf up and down the eastern coast, in such a way that you don’t move to the right at all after you start surfing

29. Here’s the sweet reward for the Mew Glitch

30. There are no Dark or Steel types. Magnemite and Magneton are pure Electric.

31. there is no Exp share in this gen, put tough-to-level pokemon in the front of your party and switch to a stronger member after 1 turn. as long as the pokemon was in battle at some point it will gain exp. (always switch back in trainer battles when prompted.exp gain is per poke not per battle sequence)

It’s been a while, but isn’t there exp all? And it functions the same as the exp share in X and Y I believe

The EXP ALL is obtainable from one of Oak’s assistants, I believe west of Fuschia if you’ve obtained enough Pokemon.
