  • Party in D&D have just gotten to the end of their first ‘dungeon’ and has killed their first boss.  Check below for a homebrew boss encounter for lower level characters!


    Ankheg Queen: Legendary Encounter.  

    Huge Monstrosity

    HP 150 (15d12+45)

    AC 17 (Natural Armor) 14 while prone

    Movement: 40 ft., Burrow 15 ft., Flying 40 ft.

    CR 7 (2900) CR8 (3900XP) in lair

    Senses: Darkvision 60ft. Tremorsense 60ft.

    Passive Perception 12

    STR 20 (+5) DEX 14 (+2) CON 16 (+3) INT 2 (-4) WIS 14 (+2) CHA 6 (-2)

     

    Actions:

    Multiattack: The Ankheg Queen makes 2 attacks with its forelegs

    Foreleg Attack +8 to hit 10ft reach, one target. Hit: 1d12+5 Slashing damage

    Bite Attack +8 to hit 5ft reach, one target.  Hit: 2d8+5 Slashing damage plus 4d6 acid damage.  If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it is grappled (escape DC 16).  Until this grapple ends the Ankheg Queen cannot bite another creature and has advantage on attacks against the grappled creature.

    Acid Spray (Recharge 6) 30 ft. cone provided it has no creatures grappled.  Each creature in range must make a DC16 Dex saving throw, taking 8d6 acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

    Legendary Actions: The Ankheg Queen can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn.  The Ankheg Queen regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

    Move: The Queen moves up to its speed

    Foreleg Attack: The Queen makes a single attack with its foreleg

    Acid Spray (Costs 2 actions): If available the Queen may use its Acid Spray ability

    Lair actions: On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Queen takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects:

    -The hive churns the earth beneath the lair, causing the ground to erupt and split.  The ground in a 50ft. radius around the Queen becomes rough terrain until initiative count 20 of the next round.

    -The earth in a 20ft radius around the queen is struck and shifts with physical force.  All creatures except the queen in the radius must make a DC 13 STR saving throw or take 1d4 bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone.
