Perhaps the thing that frustrates me the most about the ‘too many white dudes with stubble’ issue that people have with games and movies is that it shouldn’t matter.  It really shouldn’t.

Yes, a character’s race and gender could be changed, but chances are that that will do nothing to change the character, or the storyline.  Unless a defining characteristic of the character is some struggle that they have faced because of their race, or their gender, or a central plot line of the story revolves around them being such as they are, then a character’s ethnicity and gender shouldn’t matter.

Personally I would rather have well written and presented characters who were made white out of familiarity, ease, whatever, than I would like PoC characters who are poorly written, or even written demeaningly for the sake of having a character that is not white.

There are some bullshit excuses for the lack of diversity in protagonists within videogame narratives, I won’t deny that.  However, unless the story of the game would directly benefit from having a person of a different race or gender than what is presented then it should not be a problem worth bitching about.
