There being an explanation for it doesn’t make it not lazy. if the only design you can make for a concept is boring as hell, maybe don’t bother?
See, this is kind of what I was talking about with people never being satisfied or happy with news.
The Pokemon Company and Game Freak are making an effort to add new forms and new content to a third entry in a generation. As far as I can remember this is the first instance of a new Pokemon form being released in the middle of a generation without it being locked behind an event, or being a legendary.
Had they not added it in, and we just got a slightly more polished Sun/Moon with some minor narrative differences people would be pissy and call it lazy, despite the exact same thing being what separated Crystal from Gold/Silver, Emerald from Ruby/Sapphire, and Platinum from Diamond/Pearl. Now that they’re actually adding in new forms, reworking the story and having it in an alternate Alola, and have promised to include Pokemon that didn’t appear in Sun/Moon, it’s not enough and they’re still lazy.
You really want lazy? Go back to First Generation where evolutions could be as plain as going from 1 to 3 with no other changes in multiple families. Or where a design could be an amorphous blob in more than one family. Or better yet, go play a Digimon game which has maybe half as many Digimon available as an average Pokemon game has, and pads even that by claiming each individual color scheme of a Digimon is a completely separate entry and species.
We still have 3 months before the games come out, and we still know next to nothing about what’s going to be in it, but we do know that Game Freak is building new assets for an entry that’s only a year away from the originals, while working on a Switch title.
If you’re just going to complain about something that’s being actively worked on with next to no footage to judge it on, and your only complaint is that you think one design is lazy, maybe don’t bother yourself with the game to begin with.
“What’s there to be excited about with Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon? They’re just going to be Sun and Moon with new Solgaleo/Lunala forms.”
Firstly, we know that the games feature an alternative story set in Alola, and there have already been new/altered locations shown off. How alternative that is is up in the air at the moment, but may be either a completely alternate timeline where characters (and possibly cities/ecologies) are altered, or a story set in the future of Su/Mo much like Black 2/White 2.
Secondly, we know that the games are confirmed to have Pokemon that were not available in Su/Mo naturally. It’s pretty much guaranteed that it won’t be limited to Ultra Solgaleo/Ultra Lunala.
Thirdly, we know that Gold and Silver are coming out on the Virtual Console ahead of USu/UMo’s release, just like R/B/Y came out ahead of Su/Mo and allowed for transfer through the bank, which was announced prior to Alolan forms.
We have 5 months before it comes out, and a lot of opportunity for info to come out. Between the emphasis on it being an alternate story/timeline (coupled with the multiverse aspects that were confirmed in Su/Mo) and the Gold/Silver compatibility, I’m going to guess that we get more Alolan forms, possibly even of Kanto/Johto Pokemon that were in Su/Mo but may have evolved differently in this different Alola.
Patience, time will tell. Worst case scenario is that we end up with the new Black 2/White 2, which I’d say were the best parts of Gen 5.
Gen 1 remakes: 2004
Gen 2 remakes: 2009
Gen 3 remakes: 2014
It’s 2017, I would kill for a Gen 4 remake, but calm down people. If it doesn’t come along until Gen 8 I’ll still be happy, it’s just really early for it. In the mean time I’m stoked for Stars UltraSun/UltraMoon.
